Transplantation of retinal neurons derived from stem cells is a promising approach for the treatment of degenerative conditions of the retina that involve the loss of neurons. A recent study shows that these retinal neurons cultured in the laboratory can indeed form new synapses upon disruption of existing synapses, suggesting that transplantation of these neurons could be a viable strategy for the treatment of retinal neurodegenerative diseases.
